Can I sell excess solar energy back to the grid?

Yes, you can! Any unused solar energy your system exports to the grid will earn you compensation. How you’re paid depends on your electricity setup:

For homeowners (SP Group billing):

  • Paid at the regulated tariff minus grid charges — typically 75–80% of your electricity rate (~S$0.22/kWh as of early 2025).
  • Appears directly as a rebate on your SP Group bill.

For businesses or Open Electricity Market (OEM) users:

  • Export payments are tied to the Wholesale Uniform Singapore Energy Price (USEP), which fluctuates daily (usually between S$0.10/kWh to S$0.50/kWh).
  • Earnings are paid by remittance cheque from SP Group, or via GIRO if you submit a request form.

Special note for MCSTs:

With our Direct Export, Extra Income scheme, all solar energy generated is exported to the grid — creating an additional income stream for the property.

Are there any grants available for solar installations?

It depends on the type of property. Here's how it breaks down:

For homeowners:

There are currently no government grants available for solar panel installation on residential properties in Singapore.

But you can still go solar without the high upfront cost, check out our Rent-to-Own solar panels for a more affordable way to get started.

For businesses:

If you own or manage a commercial or industrial building, you may qualify for the Green Mark Incentive Scheme for Existing Buildings (GMIS-EB 2.0) offered by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

To be eligible:

  • Your building must be Green Mark certified
  • The level of funding depends on your Green Mark rating
  • Other criteria and documentation are also required

It's a useful option for companies planning broader energy efficiency upgrades along side solar.

Are solar panels a good investment?

Absolutely! Given Singapore’s rising electricity prices, solar panels are a smart move to cut down on those expensive bills while helping save the planet.

The amount of savings you can enjoy will largely depend on 3 factors:

  • Your energy consumption patterns
  • Your existing electricity retailer and utility rate
  • The number of solar panels that your roof can accommodate

Plus, thanks to Singapore’s energy export structure, you can also earn from selling extra power back to the grid. You’re looking at a payback period of 5-8 years for a system that will last you over 25 years. A pretty solid investment, if you ask us.

You can estimate your potential savings with our solar calculator today!

Is it worth installing solar panels for my home?

In short, yes! Solar panels are a win-win: you save on electricity bills and get paid for the clean energy you contribute back to the grid. Additionally, you’re helping the planet.

In Singapore’s climate where it is sunny all year round, installing solar panels for your home can help you save energy and costs. However, how much you save is dependent on your roof size and site conditions. Find out how much you can potentially save with our solar calculator tool.
