Can I sell excess solar energy back to the grid?

Absolutely! You can be compensated for any unused solar energy your system exports to the grid.

If you're connected through SP Group, you'll be paid via a rebate that offsets future bills. If you 're using an Open Electricity Market (OEM) retailer, you'll receive payments based on the Wholesale Uniform Singapore Energy Price (USEP) which can vary between S$0.10/kWh to S$0.50/kWh.

Here's how it works depending on your setup:

For homeowners (SP Group billing):

  • You'll be paid at the regulated tariff minus grid charges, which is about 75-80% of what you pay for electricity (~S$0.22/kWh as of early 2025).
  • This appears as a bill rebate on your SP Group account.

For businesses (or OEM users):

  • Export payments are based on USEP, which fluctuates daily.
  • You'll receive your earnings as a remittance cheque from SP Group.
  • You can also request payment via GIRO by submitting a form to SP Group.

Are there any grants available for solar installations?

Unfortunately there are currently no grants available for solar panel installation for residential properties in Singapore. However to get solar in a more affordable way, check out our Rent-to-Own solar plans!

Are solar panels a good investment?

Absolutely! Given Singapore’s rising electricity prices, solar panels are a smart move to cut down on those expensive bills while helping save the planet.

The amount of savings you can enjoy will largely depend on 3 factors:

  • Your energy consumption patterns
  • Your existing electricity retailer and utility rate
  • The number of solar panels that your roof can accommodate

Plus, thanks to Singapore’s energy export structure, you can also earn from selling extra power back to the grid. You’re looking at a payback period of 5-8 years for a system that will last you over 25 years. A pretty solid investment, if you ask us.
